As part of its policy for the development of cycling throughout the world, the UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC), the training and education centre of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has awarded the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge the status of UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite for Oceania.

The aim of the New Zealand-based UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite is to develop cycling in all its forms, with specific focus on Track, Road, BMX Racing and Mountain Bike in the Oceania Region.

Many countries are already taking advantage of the world class facilities in Cambridge to develop and prepare their athletes for competition. The role of these facilities will now expand as they become a central access point for education of riders, coaches, mechanics and officials.

An official ceremony will take place at the Grassroots Trust Velodrome on the 26 March 2024 at 9am, the following in attendance:

Simon Perry (Chair Home of Cycling Charitable Trust), Home of Cycling Charitable Trust Board Members, Jacques Landry (UCI WCC Director), Tony Mitchell (President, Oceania Cycling Confederation), Simon Peterson (CEO, Cycling New Zealand), John McDonnell (Education and Development Head), Senior Management and Staff of the Home of Cycling Charitable Trust.

UCI WCC Director Jacques Landry said: “The UCI World Cycling Centre’s Continental Development Satellites play a vital role in the development of cycling worldwide. We work closely with our Satellites, which are strategically located around the world to ensure that talented athletes and their entourage can benefit from the best possible training and education opportunities.

“The Grassroots Trust Velodrome already has a proven track record of helping athletes realise their full potential, and we look forward to working with the teams in Cambridge and the region to ensure their expertise can benefit the maximum number of people in Oceania.”

The General Manager of Grassroots Trust Velodrome, Dion Merson said:

“The establishment of a UCI WCC Development Satellite centre in Cambridge, New Zealand signifies a monumental step in both New Zealand and international cycling development. It symbolises an investment in nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and fostering a culture of excellence.
