Track Sessions

Welcome to our regular track sessions at the Velodrome. Whether you’re newly accredited or an experienced rider, we offer a variety of sessions to suit different skill levels and goals.

From open rides where you can work on your own training, to coached sessions that help build technique and fitness, our track programme gives you options to progress, refine your skills, and enjoy riding on the track.

Find out more about each session and how to get involved below.

Open Sessions

Open sessions are open to all accredited riders over the age of 14; no HOC staff provided.

Off Peak Open Roll and Open Roll - may not include any structured training including efforts and starts. No aero bars allowed.

Off Peak Training and Open Trainings - riders may bring their own efforts to the session. Personal coaches are allowed; only those coaches who are Cycling New Zealand accredited may access the apron. Please be courteous and work in with other riders during the session.

Junior Open Sessions - riders must be between 10 - 18yrs and accredited.

Coached Sessions

Coached sessions are for accredited riders aged 14+. The classes are designed to build skill and fitness in a supportive environment. These sessions are taken by a Home of Cycling coach.

Coached Novice
(Tuesday 6 - 7 pm)
You are nervous, overwhelmed, white knuckled, and don't know what you don't know. You don't like others getting too close to you on the boards, and you have no history of track burns - then this is the session for you!

You might be newly accredited and don't yet have your own track bike. You might have had plenty of time on the boards but just enjoy a slightly slower pace. One of our coaches will help you develop your track fitness and skills in a friendly non-competitive environment.

Coached Intermediate
(Monday 6 - 7 pm and Friday 7 - 8 am)
You have some idea, look a little more relaxed. You can ride the top rail deliberately. You don't vomit when the coach says 20 laps through an off. Comfortable around others and proud of the hole in your skinsuit from that first gentle slide. These classes will further develop your riding skills and fitness and are step up from our Novice classes. No restriction on gearing.

Coached Advanced
(Monday 7 - 8:30 pm) 16+ years
You are a machine, or at least that's what you see when you look in the mirror. You have a certain strut when you walk up the ramp with your glittering new bike. You confidently ride gears too big for you. You have a series of old track burns you wear like tattoos. This session has you written all over it. Designed to test your fitness and skill. You will be 16 years or older and been riding the boards regularly for a minimum of 6 months.

Coached Sprint & Endurance
(Wednesday 6:30 - 9 pm) 16+ years
This session will be coached by Zac Williams (NZ Sprint Olympian) and Dan Gardner (GB World Road Cycling team member and Tour of Southland Winner) and is not to be missed. Learn some new skills, get some tips from the wealth of experience these guys bring and also get some good hard training in! Aimed at elite level riders who are focussing on developing their race fitness and craft.

Masters Fun & Fitness
(Thursday 9 - 10 am)
This session is aimed at Master's riders (35+ years) who want a coached session in a relaxed and supportive environment. Post-ride coffee is mandatory! No aero bars permitted.

Specialist Sessions

Specialist sessions occur throughout the year leading up to events. These are generally gate or Derny focused, offering riders a chance to refine their skills and build fitness using equipment which isn't available during Open sessions.

Keep an eye on our socials (links in footer) to hear when we have specialist sessions coming up!

Private Track Bookings

You can book the track privately to tailor your training time to suit you or your group/club. These bookings can include an accredited coach, or you are welcome to bring your personal coach (must be CNZ accredited to stand on the apron).

If you would like to find out more or make a booking, please email reception@velodrome.nz or call 07 823 1421
