New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame:
Moving to Waipa “Home of Champions”

The NZ Sports Hall of Fame will be based at the Grasssroots Trust Velodrome, which is already home to Cycling New Zealand and a regional hub for High Performance Sport.

The complex is ideally situated for visitors with a bike park, playground, cafe, bike shop and visitor centre on site, and direct access to the Te Awa Cycleway and Sculpture Walk.  The Hall of Fame will be reimagined as a modern, educational, and interactive exhibit that celebrates achievement, inspires future generations, and connects communities — both through the exhibit and engaging physical and virtual experiences. Alongside the exhibit, will be school activity and education programs and an extended events calendar.

Introducing the NZ Sports Hall of Fame

The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame stands as the nation’s highest tribute to sporting excellence — celebrating the athletes, teams, and trailblazers who have shaped Aotearoa’s sporting identity. It exists to honour the legends who lifted our standards, inspired generations, and carried the pride of New Zealand onto the world stage. More than a collection of achievements, it’s a living record of the stories, sacrifices, and moments that define our sporting culture.

In late 2026, the Hall will relocate to the Grassroots Trust Arena in Cambridge, opening a new chapter with a modern, dynamic and interactive experience in this vibrant sports hub.

Introducing the Motion Lab Experience

Motion Lab is a cutting-edge interactive space designed to inspire movement through gamified sports activities, bringing the science of athletic performance to life. Aimed particularly at youth, the experience builds rhythm, balance, mental focus, and reaction speed, giving tamariki and rangatahi transferable foundations to thrive in any sport they choose.

Visitors can try a range of activities, test their skills, and explore the biomechanics behind how the body moves. Most importantly, they’ll have fun being active with friends, whānau, and colleagues - and may even discover a new sport to pursue.

It’s an experience that’s as engaging as it is empowering.

More than a Velodrome

In 2026 the Grassroots Trust Velodrome will be rebranded to the Grassroots Trust Arena. Why? Because we are so much more than a Velodrome. The name Arena reflects the multitude of facilities here and activities that will be on offer here.
